Does my homeowner’s insurance cover flooding damage?
Does My Homeowner’s Insurance Cover Flooding Damage?

Have you asked yourself ,“Does homeowner’s insurance cover flooding damage?” After the recent torrential rain we have experienced in Oklahoma, most people have wondered just that.  Unfortunately, the answer is “No”. Most standard homeowner policies provide no coverage for flood. If you’re not properly protected, this could leave you in dire straits.

According to the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), everyone lives in a flood zone. Even if you do not live near water, your home could flood due to excess rain, levee or dam breaks or a water main break.

  • If your home becomes a total loss because of a flood, what will you do?
  • Could you afford to start over from scratch, while still having outstanding debt to your mortgage company?

More than likely, the answer is “No”. That is why it is important to make sure your insurance has you properly protected.

Check To See If You Are In A Flood Zone

When buying or building a home, you should be notified if the location is in a flood zone. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has worked with the NFIP developing flood maps. These flood maps cover the entire country. They provide property owners with information on the flood risks associated with their property.

Those located in a flood zone are at a higher risk of having their property flood at some point in time. However, just because you are not located in a flood zone does not mean you will never experience a flood. After this rainy spring season we’ve experienced in Oklahoma, we should all be aware that any property can flood at any time. Check FEMA’s website to see if your home is located in a flood zone.

Flood Insurance Is Affordable

It’s important to note, flood insurance is not something that is required for you to carry. Unless you have a mortgage on your home and are located in a flood zone. At which point, your mortgage company will require that you have flood insurance. That is to protect their interest in the property, as well as yours.

Flood coverage is not something that you can add on to your current homeowner’s policy. Flood insurance is a standalone policy that has its own coverage options and deductibles. The NFIP is not the only organization who offers flood insurance, either. Our agency has access to several different carriers who provide flood coverage. Give us a call at any time to discuss your options.
